Betts Manganese Mine in Plainfield, Ma.Trip

Sunday, June 14 th dawned rainy and cool for the trip to the Betts Manganese Mine in Plainfield MA but the weather radar looked promising and the trip continued as planned.  The group met at the designated spot and 24 members of the CVMC headed for Betts, rain be damned! The group was greeted by the office manager ”Rek” and she was very surprised to see such a large group but was pleased just the same. And so we headed for the dumps. The group was shown the dump areas and which spots had been productive on past trips and people chose their spots we all got down to business. We had a lot of new and Jr. members on this trip as well as the usual veterans. The rain had subsided by the time we got there and accept for the dripping trees and a brief shower that didn’t require the donning of rain gear we had a dry day, we even got to see the sun a few times. A trip through the diggings later in the day for pictures and to see how people were doing found that everybody was finding stuff with some doing better than others. The crowd thinned out as the day progressed and the last of the members headed out about 4:30 pm. The members were finding the usual Garnet and Quartz combo along with a good amount of decent Rhodonite and some nice Pyrite. All in all the day was good and the Betts was as pleasurable and gracious as always.
