Professor John Brady, Smith College Department of Geology presents The Geological History of Chester and the Life and Times of Dr. Heman S. Lucas. This is sponsored by the Chester Historical Society. The following is from the Chester Historical Society bulletin:

Heman Lucas was the local doctor for over 40 years in the mid-to-late 1800's but his real passion was geology. He was the first to discover emery in Chester and, with the creation of the Hampden Emery Company, began the abrasives industry in Chester. Come and hear more about the geology of our area and the life and times of Dr. Heman Lucas of Chester. Refreshments will be served.

Assumption College will be hosting a Science Olympiad on March 12th. They are looking for volunteers to help with the fossils category of the Olympiad. The volunteers are needed to help with the setup of the stations from which the students will be required to identify, describe, and classify various fossil specimens. April 14 through 17. Rochester Mineral Symposium.

The four day Symposium is a meeting of people interested in mineralogy to discuss and show new studies and new minerals. Presentations take place daily by various people that are in the field of mineralogy, many research papers are presented at this time. In a nutshell it is a gathering of very knowledgeable and productive individuals connected with minerals. Some do photography and research while others give presentations on minerals they have collected. These people come from virtually all over the US and abroad. It is probably one of the most important events that take place in this country. Anyone is welcome to attend.

The sixth annual dig at this classic closed location. Both fluorescent & pegmatite minerals have been found! This is actually a "trippple diggg" with access to the Trotter Dump and Buckwheat Dump (by the Franklin Mineral Museum) areas on April 23rd and the Sterling Hill Mining Museum area on April 24th. This is a rare chance to collect many fluorescent and non fluorescent species (360+ at last count, from the Franklin area alone).

The two speakers for the March 7 meeting are Mr. John Fellows and Mr. Steve Mabee. Mr. Fellows will be discussing the June 1, 2011 tornado in Hampden and Worcester County. Mr. Mabee, who is the State Geologist for the Office of the Mass State Geologist at UMass, will be discussing hurricane Irene and its impact on the Deerfield Watershed, i.e., landslides, flooding, deposition, etc.

The guest speaker for May is Jack Megas, planetarium educator and member of the Springfield Star Club. His talk on Meteorites, called “Catch a Falling Star,” will be held in the Planetarium. The speaker’s program will begin before the regular business meeting and we will proceed as a group to the Planetarium.

We ask that if you are interested in taking part in this presentation that you arrive for the meeting on time. We want to be heading to the Planetarium by 7:10 PM and once we are in the Planetarium and the doors are closed, they will stay closed until the talk is done. History and Mineralogy of the Fillow Quarry, Branchville, Connecticut
The Fillow or Branchville Quarry was first exploited in the 1870’s.
It is one of the most classic New England pegmatites as 14 new minerals to science where discovered there during the early years of mining.
*14 type locality minerals were found here, especially rare phosphate minerals.
*Many wonderful fluorescent minerals are found at Branchville
*There is a rich history associated with Branchville, including an association with Yale U and a little controversy to boot.

Our guest speaker for the October meeting will be Lee Champigny. As some of you may know Lee is a club member and also a dealer in our Annual Show through his business “‘Leodore Champigny Jewelry”. Lee will be doing a demonstration on how to make textured dangle earrings in Silver. Any club member will be able to participate and make their own earring by the end of the meeting. If you are interested Lee must know by September 17 th so that he may have adequate materials on hand for you to create your own earrings. The cost will be $10.00 per member and payable to Lee at the meeting. We will have time for each member to create only one pair. Any member is welcome and encouraged to watch and learn even if you will not be making your own earrings. of Nash Dinosaur Track Site and Rock Shop
(formaly known as "Nash Dinosaurland")
Kornell Nash will be speaking on the life of Pliny Moody. As the story goes, in 1802 a young farm boy by the name of Pliny Moody unearthed the first dinosaur track in North America and then vanished into history. Nash has researched the life that surrounded the discovery. Nash will also give a brief summary of the different types of dinosaur tracks found in the valley and the dinosaurs that possibly made them.

SPEAKER: Ken Gliesman
The mine today known as the Tantasqua Graphite Mine in Sturbridge, MA was used by the Native Americans to obtain pure graphite for ceremonial face painting. In 1634 John Oldham while on a scouting mission for Governor Winthrop was taken to the deposit by the friendly Indians. A long and interesting history follows as many tried to harvest the resource and make money in the process. Ken Gliesman will speak of the historic deposit with a heavy emphasis on the history from 1634 to the present day. Ken will have specimens to show along with pictures taken of the open cut and from within the early 20 th century adit before it was closed off. Ken lives in Sturbridge and has been actively into mineral and shell collecting the last 30 years. Recently he has written articles for the Boston Mineral club newsletter and started doing lectures with an emphasis on Massachusetts collecting. SPEAKER: Given we have time after going over the upcoming field trips we have scheduled, and revisiting quarry collecting safety protocols, Francis Noyes will be giving a short talk on the differences in technique used in collecting minerals in different types of host rock, and the most effective techniques he has found for collecting minerals in each type of host rock, including sedimentary, metamorphic, and granitic pegmatites.

For the October meeting, Ken Gliesman will be giving a new presentation he just recently finished about the open for collecting, Westfield marble quarries. The presentation will include some of the history of the quarries, and his experiences collecting there over the past couple of years including pictures of the minerals he's collected there recently. From the phone conversation I had with him the other night, it seems the quarries have not been given the credit they should be due, and there are some quite beautiful specimens to be had from them.....if one knows where to look, which he will be sharing with us. He will also be bringing some specimens he has collected for our viewing pleasure.

December 7, 2016 ~ Elections / Holiday Party ~ short meeting & election of officers

The CVMC Holiday party is our next event at the December meeting. If you're wondering what goes on, here goes. Members with last names A to N: Please bring a main dish, hot or cold dish, finger sandwiches, crock pot, etc. Members with last names O to Z: dessert, cheese ‘n crackers, veggie platter.

The gift swap is simple, if you want to receive a gift, you need to bring a gift. The gifts have to pertain to the hobby and must be labeled as a mineral specimen, fossil, or lapidary. If you are gifting a mineral specimen please make sure it is one you would enjoy getting yourself! The gifts must be wrapped and you do not need to put your name on the gift. If anyone has any questions about the party, please contact one of the officers and they will be happy to answer any questions you have.
